The Cellular Imprisonment, also known as KДЃlДЃ PДЃani (Black Water), was obviously a colonial prison situated in the Andaman and Nicobar Destinations, India. The prison was used by the British especially to exile politics prisoners towards the remote islands. Many noteworthy dissidents just like Batukeshwar Dutt and Veer Savarkar, amongst others, were imprisoned here throughout the struggle pertaining to India's independence. Today, the complex is a national memorial monument.

Although the jail complex itself was built between 1896 and 1906, the British had been using the Andaman island destinations as a jail since the days and nights in the quick aftermath with the 1857 War of Self-reliance. [pic]

Shortly after the rebellion was suppressed, the British executed many rebels. Those who made it were exiled for life towards the Andamans to prevent them re-offending. 200 rebels were moved to the islands under the guardianship of the jailer David Barry and Key James Pattison Walker, a military doctor who had been warden of the prison at Agra. Another 733 from Karachi arrived in Apr, 1868. More criminals arrived via India and Burma while the negotiation grew. Anyone that belonged to the Mughal regal family, or who had delivered a petition to Bahadur Shah Zafar during the Rebellion was liable to be deported to the island destinations. [pic]

The distant islands were considered to be an appropriate place to penalize the rebels. Not only had been they remote from the mainland, the abroad journey (Kala Pani) to the islands as well threatened associated with loss of peuple, resulting in interpersonal exclusion. The convicts is also used in cycle gangs to set up prisons, buildings and harbour facilities. A large number of died with this enterprise. That they served to colonise this island then for the British. By the late nineteenth century the independence activity had indexed momentum. Because of this, the number of prisoners being delivered to the Andamans started developing and the dependence on a high-security prison was felt.
