Foreword: Making History by purchasing the Future1

By Allan E. Goodman, President and CEO, Institute of Intercontinental Education The Institute of International Education's delegation to Myanmar last month had an strange start. Dr . Catherine Raymond, a faculty affiliate at Upper Illinois School who curates the Burmese art collection there, was a part of the group together taken on the mission to give back to Myanmar a Buddha sculpture made more than one particular, 000 years back. At a ceremony with the minister of culture, all of us learned that the return from the Buddha was not an easy issue. The college or university had would like to provide it back a lot of 10 years ago, when it realized that the statue had been taken from the pagoda at Questionnable. But there were practically no relations between the United States and Myanmar. UPS would not take charge of such a unusual artifact, and there were no funds available to defray the price of transport. But professors who have love their particular field have got a way of existing.

Dr . Raymond's university has the only Centre for Burma studies in america, and it has been operating since the 1980s. She's one of a...
